With proper care, your tiles, racks and mats can bring you years of happy play. Without it, colors can fade, finishes can chip and materials can become damaged over time.

Heat, moisture, UV light, rough handling and the wrong cleaning methods can cause lasting damage. The good news? A few simple habits can help keep everything looking its best.

Caring for Your Mahjong Tiles

Do’s: Keep Your Tiles Looking Their Best

  • Store in a cool, dry space - Keep tiles indoors, away from direct sunlight, heat and humidity. Specialty acrylic materials, including pearlescent and tortoiseshell, are especially sensitive to UV light, which can change their coloring with exposure.

  • Wipe after play - Use a soft cloth to remove oils and dust. For tougher spots, gently wipe with a damp microfiber cloth, then dry promptly.

  • Clean gently - For a deeper refresh, use mild soapy water on a soft cloth. Wipe away soap residue with a clean, damp cloth and dry promptly.

  • Test first - If you’re unsure about a cleaning method, test it on an extra tile before applying it to your full set.

Don’ts: What to Avoid

  • Don’t leave tiles in a hot car, garage, attic or direct sunlight - UV exposure can cause discoloration, especially in specialty acrylic materials. Heat and humidity can warp or crack tiles and damage their finish. 

  • Don’t soak tiles in water - Extended submersion can weaken adhesives or materials, especially in multi-layer tiles. Water can also cause discoloration of some inks. 

  • Don’t use alcohol-based products, sanitizers or solvents - Harsh chemicals can strip paint, dull the finish, damage the surface or dull the materials.

Caring for Your Mahjong Racks

Acrylic Racks: Protect Their Color

  • Specialty acrylic racks MUST be stored out of UV light - This includes pearl, pearlescent, tortoiseshell and other specialty acrylic finishes. UV exposure can change their coloring over time. Store them in a protective case or another cool, dry place shielded from direct sunlight.

  • Wipe gently - Use a soft, damp cloth to remove dust and fingerprints, then dry promptly. Avoid abrasive scrubbers, alcohol-based products and solvents that can damage the surface.

  • Protect during storage and transport - Use a protective bag that separates each rack to avoid surface scratches. 

Painted Wooden Racks: Handle with Care

  • Prevent bumps, drops and scraping - Like any painted wood, these racks can dent, and their painted finish can chip with rough handling or improper storage.

  • Store with protection - Use a padded bag or case, and avoid packing racks against hard objects that could knock or rub against the finish. 

  • Clean with a soft cloth - Gently wipe with a dry or lightly dampened cloth, then dry promptly. Avoid soaking, abrasive cleaners and harsh chemicals.

  • Keep cool and dry - Store indoors, away from excessive heat and moisture.

Caring for Your Mahjong Mats

Our neoprene mahjong mats are easy to refresh with a gentle wash and careful drying.

Do’s: Wash Gently, Dry Flat

  • Machine wash on the delicate cycle - A color-safe detergent is recommended.

  • Lay flat to dry - After washing, smooth the mat into its natural shape and allow it to dry flat. This helps prevent wrinkles and fold lines. You can tumble dry on low heat, but if you forget to promptly remove the mat, it may wrinkle and crease. 

  • Let it dry completely before storing - Make sure your mat is fully dry before putting it away.

Don’ts: What to Avoid

  • Avoid excessive heat during washing process- Low heat for wash or drying methods. Ironing your mat is not recommended. 

  • Don't store your mat in direct UV/Sunlight - As with most fabrics, the coloring can fade or change with prolonged UV light exposure. 

What Can Happen Without Proper Care?

A little prevention helps avoid lasting damage, including:

  • Discoloration - Tiles, inks and acrylic racks can fade or change color with prolonged sunlight exposure. Specialty acrylic materials are particularly sensitive to UV light.

  • Loss of detail or finish - Harsh cleaners can remove paint from tile engravings or damage the finish of tiles and racks.

  • Dents and chips - Painted wooden racks can dent or chip when dropped, bumped or stored without protection.

  • Delamination - On multi-layer tiles, prolonged heat, humidity or improper cleaning can cause layers or decorative components between layers to separate.
