Melamine vs Acrylic: What's the Difference?
One of the most common questions we receive is:
"What's the difference between melamine and acrylic mahjong tiles?"

The answer is simple: neither material is inherently better than the other. They simply offer different experiences.
Some players love the cool, substantial feel and traditional character of melamine tiles. Others are drawn to the vibrant colors, dimensional designs, and artistic possibilities of acrylic. At My Fair Mahjong, we intentionally create collections in both materials because different players are looking for different things.
Before exploring our collections, let's take a closer look at how each type of tile is made and what makes each material unique.
How Melamine Tiles Are Made

Melamine tiles begin with molds that are custom-manufactured to My Fair Mahjong's design specifications. The melamine material is poured into these molds under heat and pressure, creating the individual tile shape and structure.
Many players are surprised to learn that melamine tiles often feel heavier than acrylic tiles. They have a cool, stone-like feel in the hand that many mahjong enthusiasts associate with traditional, premium-quality tiles. Their weight and density create a substantial playing experience that many players love.
What Players Love About Melamine
-
Cool, stone-like feel in the hand
-
Heavier weight that many players associate with premium quality
-
Durable and designed for years of play
-
Crisp artwork and engraving
-
Traditional mahjong feel
-
Excellent detail and color accuracy
How Acrylic Tiles Are Made

Unlike melamine, acrylic tiles begin as large sheets of acrylic material.
For collections featuring layered construction, multiple acrylic sheets are carefully bonded together to create the dimensional look and feel that acrylic is known for. Once bonded, the material is cut into individual tile sizes and shapes before moving through the finishing process.
Collections such as our Crystal Collection and Halo Collection showcase layered acrylic construction, while our Keepsake Collection highlights the beauty of acrylic in a more traditional tile profile.
Acrylic allows for vibrant colors, pearlized finishes, transparent elements, and artistic layered effects that create a distinctive look and feel.
What Players Love About Acrylic
-
Vibrant colors and unique visual effects
-
Beautiful layered construction in select collections
-
Modern artistic aesthetic
-
Greater design flexibility
-
Pearlized, transparent, and specialty finishes
-
Lightweight feel compared to melamine
The Craftsmanship Process
While melamine and acrylic begin as very different materials, both ultimately go through a similar finishing process that transforms them into beautiful mahjong tiles.
Step 1: Tile Creation
Melamine tiles are created using custom molds manufactured to My Fair Mahjong's design specifications. Acrylic tiles begin as large sheets of acrylic material. For layered acrylic collections, those sheets are carefully bonded together before being cut into individual tile shapes and sizes.
Step 2: Tumbling & Polishing
Once formed, the tiles are tumbled and polished to soften edges, round corners, and create the smooth feel players expect from premium mahjong tiles.
For layered acrylic collections, this process takes place after the acrylic layers have been bonded together. The result is a tile with beautifully finished edges and a comfortable feel in the hand.
Step 3: Artwork & Engraving
Depending on the collection and design, some artwork details are incorporated directly into the mold during the melamine tile creation process, while others are precision engraved or machine etched after the tiles have been formed.
This flexibility allows us to achieve the level of detail, texture, and artistry required for each individual collection.
Step 4: Painting
This is where many mahjong tiles differ dramatically in quality.
At My Fair Mahjong, we use the traditional, time-tested process of painting color and ink into engraved artwork. Depending on the design, this is accomplished through a combination of machine-assisted and hand-finished techniques. There are talented artisans creating all 160 beautiful pieces of art in every My Fair Mahjong tile set.
The paint sits within the engraving itself, creating the rich detail, depth, and artisan feel that mahjong players have appreciated for generations.
We do not use UV printing, a mass-production process that prints artwork directly onto the tile surface or into the tile engraving. While UV printing can be faster and less expensive, engraved and painted tiles are widely considered the premium standard within the mahjong industry because of their durability, craftsmanship, and traditional appearance.
Step 5: Quality Control, Inspection & Packaging
Quality is one of My Fair Mahjong's three core company values:
-
Lead with Kindness
-
Focus on Quality
-
Always Do Right by Our Customers
Because of this commitment, every production run undergoes extensive quality-control reviews, inspections, and testing throughout the manufacturing process.
We maintain quality standards that significantly exceed many common industry practices because we believe our customers deserve products that are beautiful, durable, and built to last. Our team carefully evaluates tile construction, engraving quality, paint application, color consistency, dimensional accuracy, and overall appearance before approving products for shipment.
Only after these reviews and inspections are complete are tiles carefully packaged with their accompanying accessories and materials.
Step 6: Shipping
Once quality control, inspections, and packaging have been completed, the finished sets begin their journey to customers around the world.
Material vs. Size vs. Construction
One important thing to understand is that material and tile size are not the same thing.
Acrylic tiles can be large or small. Melamine tiles can be large or small. Some melamine and acrylic tiles are layered, while others are not.
For example:
-
Our Destination Collection tiles are made from melamine and use our Large tile size.
-
Our Keepsake Collection tiles are made from acrylic and use that same Large tile size.
-
Our Halo Collection tiles are acrylic and feature layered construction.
-
Our Crystal Collection tiles are acrylic and feature a thicker, chunky profile.
The material determines what the tile is made from, while the collection determines its size, thickness, and construction style.
